In June 2011, after Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari took a Red Bull Show Car run to the Chinese city state, demoing a Red Bull around Lung Wo Road and performing a number of short sprints, burnouts and donuts. Wesley Wan told the South China Morning Post. "This is the first step in gaining the support of the people, we want to raise the exposure of F1 by staging this live show, and I hope it will lead to Hong Kong hosting a grand prix race one day. My dream is that Hong Kong, like Singapore, Malaysia and China, will be a stop on the grand prix circuit. And as far as a street circuit is concerned, if Monte Carlo and Singapore can have it, why can't Hong Kong?" Wan also revealed that Hong Kong was sounded out about hosting an F1 race back in 1997, before the former British colony was returned to the Chinese. However the offer was turned down.Wesley Wan 〔(Hong Kong takes 'first step' to F1 race? ) Crash.net. 19 June 2011.〕
